Valencia

Valencia is the third largest city in Spain, and is ideally located on the Mediterranean coast, making this is a fantastic city to visit at any time of the year due to its glorious summers and mild winters.

Although Valencia is known a a large tourist destination, you should not think that this is not a true Spanish city. There is much more to Valencia that meets the eye. Yes, it is home to some of the most wonderful beaches in Spain, but this is a vibrant, modern city, with historic roots going back over 2000 years. Over the years, the Romans, the Muslims and and the Christians have all left their mark here, and have all helped to give the city its unique character.

Despite being the third largest city in Spain, once you have taken a wander into the stunning historic quarter, you will very quickly feel as if you are discovering a much smaller city, one bustling with heritage and spirit. There are some remarkable examples of architecture in this part of the city, not to mention its network of old narrow streets and small plazas, which appear around each corner. If you have a nose for discovery, then why not take a stroll through this area and see what you can find. This area is also home to many of the city’s most famous attractions such as Valencia Cathedral, the Santa Catalina Church and Bell Tower, Plaza de la Virgin, or the ever busy Mercado Central (central market), where you can enjoy all the colours and flavours that this delightful area of the country has to offer.

Do not forget, Valencia is a beach city, so if you find yourself in need of some time to lay on the sand or fancy a swim in the sea, you are never far away from cooling off and enjoying the city at a more relaxed pace.

More recently, the city has becoming a bit of a hub for modern architecture too, no doubt inspired to a large degree by the impressive Congress Centre, which was designed by the internationally renowned British architect Norman Foster, and which opened to the public in 1998. This building forms a central part of what is known as the City of Arts and Sciences area of the city. This is well worth a visit and demonstrates that this city is doing more than simply relying on its historic past, and it pushes to not only keep with the times, but forge its own path in cultural and artistic history.

As is very often the case in Spain, food here forms a major part of the way of life and Valencia is no exception. Said to be home to the most authentic Paellas in all of Spain, if you are a seafood lover, your taste buds will enjoy a real treat. If fish is not your thing, then not to worry, apparently the most authentic Paella dishes are made with a mix of pork and chicken. But remember, there is much more food here than just Paella. If you want to truly indulge your senses, just select from one of the many cafes and restaurants, and discover the culinary delights which are waiting for you.
